“Which lens should I take?” is the question that decides your margin on most dispensing sales, and the honest answer depends on power, frame and budget — in that order. This guide explains what lens index really is, which index suits which prescription, how to talk about coatings without over-promising, and how to hold power-wise stock so you can deliver the same day.

1. What lens index actually means

The refractive index of a material is how much it slows and bends light compared with a vacuum. A higher index bends light more per millimetre of material, so a lens of the same power can be made with less material. The result is a thinner and usually lighter lens. That is the whole idea — index is a cosmetic and comfort property, not an optical quality property.

Two other numbers ride alongside it and are worth knowing. Abbe number describes chromatic dispersion: lower Abbe means more colour fringing at the lens edge, and as index climbs Abbe generally falls. Specific gravity is weight per unit volume — a high-index lens is thinner but the material is denser, so the weight saving is smaller than customers expect.

There is a third factor most staff underuse: the frame. Edge thickness on a minus lens depends on how far the lens has to be cut from its optical centre, so a large or a rimless frame makes a modest power look thick, and a small rounded frame makes a strong power look surprisingly slim. Recommending a smaller frame is often cheaper for the customer and better looking than upgrading two index steps.

2. The five indices, and who each is for

Polycarbonate sits alongside these at around 1.59 and is worth stocking for a specific reason rather than a thickness one: it is impact resistant, which makes it the sensible recommendation for children, for sports eyewear and for safety use.

Treat the power bands above as conversation starters, not thresholds. A +5.00 in a small oval frame may be perfectly comfortable in 1.60, and a −3.00 in a wide rimless may need 1.67 to look right. Hold the demo lens up next to the frame the customer has actually chosen — that comparison sells better than any number.

3. Recommending without over-selling

High-index lenses carry good margin, which is exactly why they need to be recommended honestly. A customer who feels upsold does not come back, and in a repeat-visit trade that costs more than the extra margin earned.

  • Lead with the frame they picked. “In this frame, with your power, the standard lens will sit about this thick at the edge” is a fact. “You should take the best lens” is a pitch.
  • Show, do not tell. Keep cut demo lenses in each index for a −4.00 and a −6.00. Ten seconds of holding them beats ten minutes of explanation.
  • Offer two options, not five. A good option and a better one. Five options produce no decision.
  • Say when the cheaper lens is right. For a −1.00 in a small frame, 1.56 is genuinely the correct answer, and saying so buys you credibility for the day it is not.
  • Record what you dispensed. Index, coating and lens brand on the bill, so a comparison next year is possible and a warranty claim is settleable.

4. Blue-cut, photochromic and coatings

Anti-reflective

The one coating that is easy to justify on every lens. It cuts reflections, improves night driving and makes the eyes visible in photographs instead of a pair of white discs. Modern hard multi-coats add scratch resistance and an easy-clean top layer. If a customer takes only one add-on, this is the one.

Blue-cut

Blue-filtering lenses are the biggest seller of the last few years in India, driven entirely by screen time. The scientific position on blue light causing eye damage remains debated, and it is not honest to sell it as protection from harm. What you can say fairly: many wearers report less tiredness on long screen days, the coating has a mild tint, and it costs little. Let the customer decide on comfort.

Photochromic

Lenses that darken in UV light and clear indoors. Genuinely useful for someone who moves in and out all day and does not want to carry sunglasses. Two caveats worth stating before you sell: most photochromic lenses activate poorly behind a car windscreen, because the glass blocks the UV that triggers them, and the transition back to clear takes longer in cold weather. Customers told this upfront are satisfied; customers who discover it in the car are not.

Progressives

A separate axis from index, but the same principle applies: fit and measurement matter more than price band. Monocular PD and fitting height are not optional on a progressive, and a cheap progressive fitted accurately outperforms an expensive one fitted by eye.

5. Building your price tiers

Customers cannot compare lens brands, so they compare structure. Three named tiers convert far better than a price list:

  • Essential — 1.56 with a basic hard coat. The honest default for low powers and budget-conscious buyers.
  • Comfort — 1.60 with anti-reflective, blue-cut optional. Where most mid-power sales should land.
  • Premium — 1.67 or 1.74 with a full multi-coat, or a branded progressive. For high powers and for customers who want the thinnest possible.

Two rules keep this working. Publish the tiers to your staff so every customer hears the same three names and the same three prices, and record which tier was sold on the invoice — without that, you cannot tell whether your premium tier is actually selling or whether one salesperson is discounting it away.

6. Stocking lenses power-wise

A stock lens delivered the same day is one of the few real advantages an independent shop has. But “we have 240 lenses in stock” is a useless number. What you need to answer at the counter is narrower: do we have this exact power right now?

That is why stock lenses are best held as a grid — sphere down one axis, cylinder across the other, a quantity in each cell. A single-vision 1.56 range might run from +6.00 to −6.00 in 0.25 steps against cylinders of 0.00, −0.50, −0.75, −1.00 and −2.00. Each cell is a real, countable, sellable thing.

  • Start narrow. Low and moderate spheres with low cylinders cover the large majority of walk-in prescriptions. Order the tail.
  • Let the grid tell you what to buy. After a few months the cells that keep emptying are your real range, and the ones untouched since opening are dead capital.
  • Count by cell, not by total. A total that matches while individual cells are wrong is the worst of both worlds — it looks correct and fails at the counter.
  • Decrement on sale, automatically. A grid maintained by hand is accurate for about a fortnight.
